Micky van de Ven Double Ends Everton's Run at Brand New Home Ground

The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
